Structured light fields carrying orbital angular momentum (OAM) have been widely studied, and a variety of applications have been found. The exploration of the generation of the structured light beams with higher purity, order, and efficiency has become an inevitable trend. In early years, structured light beams are normally generated with the extra-cavity methods, as it is simpler in principle. However, the intra-cavity generation of the structured light has a better beam purity and higher light conversion efficiency. Here, the current advance in the production of structured light directly from lasers based on spatial light modulators (SLMs), metasurfaces, and microrings is reviewed.

In this chapter, we overview the Q-switched 2 μm solid-state laser development achieved in recent years, including flash- and diode-pumped solid-state lasers based on active and passive modulators. In summary, active Q-switching is still the first choice for obtaining large pulse energy at 2 μm currently, while passive Q-switching based on saturable absorbers (SAs), especially the newly emerging broadband low-dimension nanomaterial, is becoming promising approach in generating Q-switched 2 μm lasers specially with high repetition rate, although the output power, pulse duration, and pulse energy needs further enhancement. Besides, some important applications of 2 μm lasers, such as medicine, laser radar, and infrared directional interference, have also been introduced in brief.

A highly efficient milli-joule-level Q-switched Tm,La:CaF 2 laser is experimentally demonstrated. By employing an acoustooptic modulator, the diode-pumped pulsed lasers are stably operated at repetition rates ranging from 500 Hz to 10 kHz. Dualwavelength operation of 1881.7 nm and 1888.5 nm is achieved with slope efficiency of 64.7%. Up to 1.89 mJ of pulse energy is obtained at a pulse width of 100 ns, corresponding to a peak power of 18.88 kW. These results verified that the Tm,La:CaF 2 crystal could be a promising candidate for achieving highly efficient and high-energy pulsed lasers.
