Dipterofauna Associated withSus scrofaLinné, 1758, Carcasses in Urban and Coastal Regions of São Paulo State, Brazil

Abstract: Cadaverous entomofauna successions vary according to the region, environment, and climate, and such differences may occur within the same country due to seasonal variations. The present study aimed to analyze and compare the dipterofauna that visit or colonize carcasses in the urban and coastal areas of São Paulo, Brazil, during summer and winter seasons. Four swine (Sus scrofa Linné, 1758) carcasses of approximately 12 kg were used. The animals were previously euthanized and then placed in metal cages covered… Show more

“…2 O tempo de decomposição observado foi similar a dados encontrados previamente na Reserva Florestal Adolpho Ducke. 29,30 Entretanto, este tempo apresenta diferenças ao observado nas regiões Sul 31 e Sudeste do Brasil, 32 onde carcaças suínas similares às utilizadas neste experimento se decompuseram em períodos de 14 e 7 dias, respectivamente, sem a ocorrência do processo de saponificação.…”

“…There are a number of studies with inventory of Diptera in the Neotropics (e.g., Carvalho & Couri, 1991;Couri et al, 2000;Pamplona et al, 2000;Krüger et al, 2010;Borkent et al, 2018;Zafalon-Silva et al, 2018), on the other hand, several studies focused on groups with agricultural or forensic importance (e.g., Ferraz et al, 2009;Mulieri et al, 2011;Garcia et al, 2003;Cavallari et al, 2015;Carvalho et al, 2017;Olea et al, 2017). With regard to Muscidae, there are a number of inventories in Brazil, but unbalanced between the different Brazilian biomes and states.…”

“…The present study is the first exhaustive survey of Muscidae for the State of São Paulo based on non-baited collectings. Previous surveys focused on urban and/or cadaveric fauna (Linhares, 1981;Dias et al, 2014;Cavallari et al, 2015). In Brazil, 358 species are described and recorded, 156 of these occur in the State of São Paulo (Lowenberg-Neto & Carvalho, 2013, with updates from Pereira-Colavite & Carvalho, 2012Cavallari et al, 2015;Fogaça & Carvalho, 2018).…”

“…With about 210 valid species (Steyskal 1968, Wendt and Ale-Rocha 2014a classified in 32 genera (Hancock 2010), richardiid flies have been insufficiently sampled in most regions of the world, and many of the included genera need to be revised. The biology of richardiid species has been poorly investigated, but it is known that many are potential pests of some types of fruits (Peñaranda and Ospina 1999, Montilla et al 2007, Arellano et al 2015, while others are saprophagous species associated with animal decomposition (Lopes de Carvalho and Linhares 2001, Moretti et al 2008, Cavallari et al 2015.…”
