Direct alkylation of heteroarenes with unactivated bromoalkanes using photoredox gold catalysis

Abstract: A protocol for direct C–H alkylation of heteroarenes was developed using photoredox catalysis as a mode of activation for unactivated bromoalkanes. Dimeric Au(i) complex, [Au2(dppm)2]Cl2, served as an efficient photocatalyst for this transformation.

“…In this vein, Barriault described the direct alkylation of some pyridines and quinolines (as well as of some azoles and electron‐rich heteroarenes) with primary, secondary, and tertiary alkyl bromides by using a dimeric gold(I) photoredox catalyst ([Au 2 (dppm) 2 ]Cl 2 ) and UVA light [Scheme , Eq. (1)] . Additionally, Frenette and Fadeyi reported a manganese‐based system under irradiation with a blue LED for the direct alkylation of lepidine, as well as of some other azines, with primary, secondary, and tertiary alkyl iodides [Scheme , Eq.…”

“…As part of their study of the direct functionalization of heteroarenes with unactivated bromoalkanes under photoredox catalysis with gold complexes, the Barriault group also applied their procedure to the alkylation of some azoles such as ( N ‐methyl)benzimidazole, benzoxazole, benzothiazole, and caffeine with good efficiency . Finally, Joo reported two strategies for the direct alkylation of nitropyrazoles, using α‐chloroacetates/acetamides as alkylating agents .…”
