Direct coupling of CO2 with epoxides catalyzed by lanthanum(III) supported on magnetic mesoporous organosilica nanoparticles

Abstract: Lanthanum(III) supported on the magnetic mesoporous organosilica nanoparticle (La@MON) has been described as an efficient, simple, and durable heterogeneous catalyst for the synthesis of 5-membered cyclic carbonates from carbon dioxide (CO2) and epoxides. Under optimized reaction conditions, various terminal epoxides have been converted to the corresponding carbonates in the presence of 0.3 mol% La@MON and 0.5 mol% tetrabutylammonium iodide (TBAI) as co-catalyst at relatively mild reaction conditions. It was a… Show more

“…Among transition and post transition metals (Figure , in blue), examples with Ti-, , Cr-, , Co-, Ga-, Y-, , Ru-, Rh-, Pd-, Cd-, , and In-based catalysts have been documented. Examples of catalysts featuring lanthanides, such as La, Ce, Nd, , Eu, Gd, , Tb, Dy, , Ho, Er, Yb, ,, and Lu, have also been reported. Apart from titanium and chromium, all these metals have a low to medium global availability .…”

“…The resulting catalyst exhibited excellent activity and selectivity during the direct coupling of carbon dioxide with various types of terminal epoxides under relatively mild reaction conditions. 57 With the ongoing interest in the design of new and efficient catalysts based on dipicolinic derivatives, we would like to report that mesoporous organosilica nanoparticles with dipicolinic thioester (SNS-MON) could be considered as SNS pincer ligands for the preparation of Ni-based catalysts denoted as Ni@SNS-MON. Ni@SNS-MON was found to reveal excellent activity and selectivity for the direct coupling of carbon dioxide with various types of terminal epoxides.…”

“…Mesoporous organosilica materials have been attracting tremendous interest as promising heterogeneous catalysts for different organic transformations. We have recently described that the magnetic mesoporous organosilica nanoparticles with dipicolinic amide groups can be used as solid ONO pincer ligands for immobilization of La(III) as a rare-earth metal-based catalyst. The resulting catalyst exhibited excellent activity and selectivity during the direct coupling of carbon dioxide with various types of terminal epoxides under relatively mild reaction conditions .
