Direct evaluation of the antioxidant properties of salivary proline-rich proteins

Abstract: Proline-rich proteins are associated with the formation of an acquired protein layer overlying the tooth enamel surface. Previous studies have described the antioxidant activity of salivary histatin against the hydroxyl radical from Fenton’s reaction, acting as the critical reactive oxygen species. However, the role of proline-rich proteins in mitigating the oxidative stress caused by reactive oxygen species in the oral cavity remains unclear. In this study, we investigated the antioxidant effects of proline-r… Show more

“…Pro and proline-rich proteins are often implicated in stress tolerance in plants [57][58][59]. Salivary proline-rich proteins possess good antioxidant properties [60]. Hypothalamic proline-rich polypeptides were found to protect brain neurons in aluminum neurotoxicosis [61].…”

“…Proline contributes to the activation of the mTOR amino acid sensing signaling pathway, inducing protein formation. Furthermore, proline positively affects stem and tumor cells, implying proliferation (Steinert et al, 1998;Wu et al, 2005;Comes et al, 2013;Taga et al, 2016;Li and Wu, 2018;Osawa et al, 2018;Komatsu et al, 2020;Martínez-Reyes and Chandel, 2020;Patriarca et al, 2021). Glycine, as a building block, is involved in the synthesis of proteins.…”

“…contributes to protect plants from photo-oxidative stress (i.e., light-dependent generation of ROS) (Liang et al, 2013). Recently, it emerged that salivary L-Pro-rich proteins can neutralize ROS, and specifically hydroxyl radicals (Komatsu et al, 2020).…”
