Direct LED backlight for large area LCD TVs: brightness analysis

Abstract: A direct or bottom LED backlight is a key concept in large area LCD displays because it does not use a light guide, is flat, and is easy to assemble. In this paper, a method of luminance management for a bottom LED backlight is proposed and demonstrated. We analytically calculate both the power consumption and brightness uniformity in function of: screen brightness, screen size, backlight thickness, transmittance of the LCD panel, reflective cavity efficiency, gain and cone angle of enhancement films, LED arra… Show more

“…Moreover, axial luminance and output efficiency have a similar trend with the variation of C m , which illustrates that the compression process makes the output light energy more adaptive to BEFs. For the backlight system, the viewing angle is another critical evaluation parameter [21]. In the simulation, the viewing angles with different C m were investigated as well and the results are shown in Figs.…”

“…A critical technology in LED lighting is how to achieve a plane with uniform illuminance distribution, which is generated by a LED system as thin as possible. For instance, a LED backlighting module is always decided to provide uniform illuminance on LCD panel and meanwhile meets the thickness requirement of flat panel display [4].…”

“…In practice, the backlight design has a critical effect upon both the display properties of the LCD device and its physical thickness. Thus, the problem of optimizing the backlight design in such a way as to maximize the brightness and luminance uniformity of the LCD display whilst simultaneously satisfying consumer preferences for ever thinner display screens has attracted significant attention in recent years [1][2][3].…”
