Direct Measurement of the Pion Valence-Quark Momentum Distribution, the Pion Light-Cone Wave Function Squared

Abstract: We present the first direct measurements of the pion valence-quark momentum distribution which is related to the square of the pion light-cone wave function. The measurements were carried out using data on diffractive dissociation of 500 GeV/c pi(-) into dijets from a platinum target at Fermilab experiment E791. The results show that the /q&q> light-cone asymptotic wave function describes the data well for Q2 approximately 10 (GeV/c)(2) or more. We also measured the transverse momentum distribution of the diff… Show more

“…These two examples share strong similarities in the soft gluon radiation contributions and we will compare our resummation formula to existing data from the E791 experiment [33,34]. This will provide a benchmark test to assess the applicability of our approach to diffractive dijet production at the EIC.…”

“…We now turn to the jet transverse momentum dependence of the coherent diffractive events, where we show 2. Comparisons of the Sudakov effects in the total transverse momentum q ⊥ distribution (upper) and jet transverse momentum P ⊥ distribution (lower) for the diffractive dijet production in π-induced scattering on the nuclear target of Platinum with the experimental data from E791 Collaboration [33,34]. The normalizations are arbitrary in the comparisons.…”

“…Finally, we shall also go beyond the previous pion analysis by two of us in Ref. [16] by taking into account QCD evolution that allows us to compare our predictions for the holographic pion parton distribution function (PDF) and parton distribution amplitude (PDA) with the data from the E615 [23] and E791 [24] Collaborations respectively. In particular, we shall perform fits to the E615 data in order to determine the low hadronic scale (which was left unspecified in Ref.…”
