Direct Observation of Single‐Molecule Magnets Organized on Gold Surfaces

“…The comparison shows that the molecules [17] have also apparently been degraded by radiation. Nonetheless, this observation is consistent with the results from STM measurements [10,18,21]. Homogeneous layers of apparently intact molecules were reported in [10,21].…”

“…Nonetheless, this observation is consistent with the results from STM measurements [10,18,21]. Homogeneous layers of apparently intact molecules were reported in [10,21]. In contrast, the direct deposition of Mn 12 -th on Au(111) yielded STM images of diffuse clusters [18], thus indicating a fragmentation in agreement with previous XAS measurements at the RGBL beamline [18].…”

“…There are few reports on the film production of Mn 12 derivatives to date [8][9][10][11][12][13][14], and even less reports on the significant enhancement of magnetic properties from that of the parent compound [11,12]. Here we report the production of thin, homogeneous Mn 12 -acetate films of continuous coverage by the dip-and-dry (DAD) method, and the enhancement of the magnetic anisotropy of Mn 12 -acetate, which has undergone similar solvent exposure.…”

“…8,9 On the other hand, scanning tunneling microscopy ͑STM͒ and spectroscopy ͑STS͒ can be implemented to investigate the electronic and magnetic states of Mn 12 molecules while the preparation of individual Mn 12 clusters or SMM monolayers on surfaces remains the most crucial issue. Recently, many different approaches to this goal have been reported with the most promising grafting techniques based on direct deposition either via thiol modified ligands of Mn 12 interacting with the Au͑111͒ surface [10][11][12] or taking advantage of electrostatic interactions. 13 Additionally, bonding of SMMs to functionalized Au͑111͒ ͑Ref.…”
