Direct observation of the tympanic cavity by the superfine fiberscope.

Abstract: As a clinical test, direct observation of the middle ear should be ideally performed without any surgical intervention such as myringotomy. This paper reports a newly invented superfine fiberscope which makes it possible to insert through the eustachan tube, and direct views of the middle ear structures on normal subjects and patients. The patients were of a small cholesteatoma and traumatic dislocation of the ossicular chain. All of them were tested with local anesthesia in outpatient clinic. This superfine fi… Show more

“…Also anatomical patency of the eustachian tube can be confirmed. In a Japanese study even small cholesteatomas and traumatic dislocations of the ossicular chain were visualized [6]. Chays et al [8] could also observe facial recess and tympanic sinus, which turned out to be difficult in our study.…”

“…Kimura et al [6] have studied patients with cholesteatoma or traumatic dislocation of the ossicular chain with superfine fiberscopes. They used local anesthesia in an outpatient clinic instead of general anesthesia as preferred by some authors.…”

“…Transtubal endoscopies of the middle ear have been made by several authors: Kimura 1989, Hopf 1991, Magnan 1991, Edelstein 1994and Klug 1999. It has been proved that it is possible to observe at least some of the middle ear structures and pathology via the Eustachian tube with an endoscope.…”
