Direct Synthesis of Nano Alumina from Natural Bauxite

Abstract: The nano alumina have been synthesised employing a novel eco-friendly route from natural bauxite ore. The synthesis of alumina powder from natural bauxite is of great interest owing to the fact that it enables mass production without the use of expensive chemical resources and processing techniques. Employing the Bayer process, synthesis of nano alumina has been made from natural bauxite followed by sol-gel route. The ultra fine alumina powder with high surface area is obtained through the digestion of gel fol… Show more

“…As it can be seen in Figure 3, the absorption peaks of NIP ( Figure 3A) and MIP after extraction of template molecules ( Figure 3C) were obviously similar, this observation implied that all template molecules may have leached out during washing and drying stage. Figure 3C shows, the vibration bands at 1028 cm −1 and 1025 cm −1 leads to the stretching and bending vibration of Al-O bond [32]. The absorption bands observed around 3400 cm −1 are due to the stretching and bending modes of hydroxyl groups on Al 2 O 3 surface.…”

“…The metal ions remaining in solution are then concentrated by solvent (water) evaporation before further treatment for the precipitation. When the mineral contains one major species, single MO particles are produced, but for more complex ore, composite materials can be obtained [35,36].…”

“…Several raw materials including bauxite [12] and nonbauxitic materials such as sillimanite, kaolin, and mica [13] which possess a high percentage of alumina have been successfully used as starting material in alumina synthesis. Although Bayer process has been widely employed in the synthesis of alumina using bauxite as a starting material, several researchers have successfully synthesized high purity alumina through the judicious application of materials such as nitrates, chloride, and sulphate as starting materials for alumina synthesis [11][12][13][14]. Available literature reveals that the synthesis of alumina is commonly carried out from synthetic chemical [13].…”
