Direct Synthesis of Sodalite from Kaolin: The Influence of Alkalinity

Abstract: Alkalinity is one of the most important factors that influence the crystallization process of zeolite and the product properties. The influence of alkalinity on the synthesis of sodalite from kaolin without calcinations was reported in this research. The synthesis of sodalite using molar ratio of Na2O/Al2O3 = x, H2O/Na2O = 128/x and SiO2/Al2O3 = 2/x, where x was the variation of molar ratio of alkalinity: 10, 20, 30, and 40. The synthesis has done by stirring for 6 h, without aging, and the crystallization tim… Show more

“…Accordingly, sodalite can be synthesized in the presence of low to medium amount of NaOH powder, 7.32-7.72g in the fused reaction gel, at 100-220°C. This can reveal the influence of alkaline environment in zeolite formation and alkalinity of the reaction medium was proven to be an important parameter affecting the synthesis of sodalite (Sari et al, 2018). Meanwhile, from the theoretical point of view, higher alkalinity condition, there would be a high concentration of OHin the experimental environment.…”

“…The six membered rings define a series of tunnels whose intersections lead to formation of large cavities which are occupied by chloride ions coordinated with sodium ions (Rabiller et al, 2004). This mineral has drawn scientists' attention to focus on its potential applications such as optical material (Arieli et al, 2004), adsorption and ion exchange (Mirfendereski & Mohammadi, 2011), catalyst support (Ogura et al, 2008) arisen from small pore sizes and high ion exchange capacity (Sari et al, 2018). Accordingly, numerous studies have been widely performed on the synthesis of this microporous zeolite.…”

Published data from various studies [18,26,35,36,71,72] were used as a guide to interpret corn stover ash's spectra. As expected, the corn stover's FT-IR spectra revealed a comparable series of absorption bands; the main composition of the sample was oxide of Si.…”
