Directly Mapping the Spatial Distribution of Organic Compounds on Mineral Rock Surfaces by DESI and LAESI Mass Spectrometry Imaging

Abstract: Here, we present a new application of desorption electrospray ionization (DESI) and laser ablation electrospray ionization (LAESI) mass spectrometry imaging to assess the spatial location of organic compounds, both polar and nonpolar, directly from rock surfaces. Three carbonaceous rocks collected from an aquatic environment and a berea sandstone subjected to a small-scale oil recovery experiment were analyzed by DESI and LAESI. No rock pretreatment was required before DESI and LAESI analyses. DESI detected an… Show more

“…The LAESI system has been described in detail in our previous publications. , In short, a mid-IR OPO laser tuned to 2.94 μm (IR Opolette, Opotek, Carlsbad, USA) was employed. The laser irradiated the samples, and the irradiated material was desorbed and ionized assisted by a nanoelectrospray source positioned above the model.…”

“…As such, there has recently been interest in understanding the surface chemistry of these materials to facilitate the development of improved extraction methods. A recent study leveraged both DESI‐MS and LAESI‐MS to spatially map both polar and non‐polar metabolites on the surface of two different types of mineral rock 163 . DESI revealed the distribution of fatty acids and a disaccharide across the rock surface, whereas LAESI revealed the presence of hydrocarbons.…”

“…Desorption electrospray ionization (DESI) is an ambient ionization technique with which tissue sections can be analyzed without sample pretreatment. When coupled to a mass spectrometer (MS), DESI-MS allows atmospheric detection of ions from tissue surfaces . DESI-MSI has been routinely used to detect and spatially map lipids and small molecules after its introduction in 2004 .…”
