Dirofilariasis – an emergent human parasitosis in Romania

Abstract: Changing vector habitats due to climate change increase the risk of less common vector-borne diseases spreading to temperate areas. An example of such a disease is dirofilariasis. The present article is a case presentation of ocular dirofilariasis. The peculiarities of this case and its implications to public health are presented herein, in addition to a literature review of the epidemiological data regarding dirofilariasis in dogs and humans. A16-year-old adolescent, who had never travelled outside Galaţi Cou… Show more

“…Humans are exposed to this disease through the bite of infected mosquitoes and, as it is an emerging disease, it is not surprising that increasing of human dirofilariosis cases are being reported in endemic countries [2]. Zoonotic D. Immitis , as well as seropositive inhabitants, have been reported in Western Europe [25–30] and Eastern Europe [13, 3134]. A similar pattern has been observed with D. repens , being more frequently reported in recent years [13, 35, 36].…”

“…This paper reports the case of a 29-year-old patient with no general medical conditions presenting a painless swelling in the right genian region secondary to infection with the parasite D. repens. Following the analysis of the literature, it can be affirmed that this is the first case of a parasitic cyst caused by D. repens infection localized in the genian region reported in Romania [42][43][44][45].…”

“…1 Olteanu has made a general review of dirofilariasis in Romania for the period of 1956-1995 with a general prevalence of 35% dirofilariasis in the stray dogs: among 1640 dogs a prevalence of 4,3% D.immitis and 1.34% D.repens, respectively were recorded. 2 Human Romanian cases were sporadically and much later reported by other authors (Gherman, 1990, Voiculescu, 1996 recently I. Popescu, 4 2012, Arbune, 2015 5 ), including other filarial worms with dog or horse origin such as Setaria labiatopapillosa (Panaitescu, 1999). 6 Dirofilariasis is now recognised as a worldwide-emerging parasitic zoonosis.…”
