Discontinuous splenogonadal fusion diagnosed on computed tomography

Abstract: Splenogonadal fusion is a very rare congenital anomaly which often manifests as a scrotal mass and rarely as cryptorchidism. It can be of continuous and discontinuous type based on the presence of a band of connecting splenic tissue. We report a rare case of discontinuous type of splenogonadal fusion in an adolescent male presenting as cryptorchidism. We emphasize the computed tomographic findings, which helped us in preoperative diagnosis and aided in appropriate management.

“…On ultrasound, SGF may appear as a hypoechoic extratesticular mass(es) with no specific sonographic features to distinguish it from a neoplasm [22] . Reported Doppler characteristics are those of central vascularity with a branching pattern which is said to differ from the “criss-cross” pattern typically detected in a neoplastic mass [23] . However, any pattern of internal vascularity in a scrotal mass is potentially suspicious and prompts further investigation.…”

“…Continuous SGF is diagnosed when a fibrous band of splenic tissue is found between the spleen and testis and can be unmistakably recognized on imaging studies [19,[21][22][23]. Continuous SGF is often associated with other anomalies such as cryptorchidism and limb defects [24].…”
