In this article, we use rank to understand the price of chemical elements. We observe that the role of the volume from global mining production dominates in materials economics. In this article, we explore simplifying mechanisms in materials economics for conceptionally organizing the flows of chemical elements into society. We use the concept of rank, which plays a crucial role in information theory where power laws are involved, and is a useful measure for seeking extremal principles. Borrowing from an analogy to Zipf's law leads to a power-law relationship between abundance and rank thatpressing the Zipf's law analogy further-may suggest that the price paid for elemental materials optimizes efficient utilization. Factors such as weight, volume, and moles in the earth's crust or in global mining production of elements are used in our analysis. For this research, 42 elements with price and production data for the year 2010 (a relatively typical year) were considered. We observe that the role of the volume from global mining production dominates in materials economics and indicate that elements such as Te and He should be sold at prices at least ~ 100-1000 times more than their present price for efficient utilization.

Exploration programs involve long, multi-branched decision pathways with many potential outcomes from a single starting point. Critical decisions along this pathway include the choice of the area(s) in which to explore, and the choice to acquire new data sets to assist in exploration. Included in this is a factoring of risks, including the technical risks associated with imperfect data and the value relative to cost of collecting more data. In our experience it is not common practice to explicitly assess and quantify the impact of data on exploration decisions. A better understanding of the opportunity provided by data has the potential to improve the quality and/or ease of decision making. In this study we explore the potential role of data richness mapping as part of a decision making workflow. We outline a method to quantitatively assess data richness following a four level hierarchy, namely presence of data (L1), quality of data (L2) and attributes of data (L3). Measures of these are combined across several data sets to give an overall estimate of data richness (L4). Using this data richness map, along with past exploration records and a prospectivity model, we conduct an illustrative case study for gold exploration in the Bryah Sub-basin (Yerrida Basin) region of Western Australia. The first application is to produce a simple data based classification of regions with different technical risk characteristics. The second application is to combine this with a prospectivity model to better understand exploration potential. The third application uses data richness mapping to understand which data sets are most likely to have an impact on regional exploration. In each case we show how an understanding of data richness can help support exploration decision making. The demand for mineral resources which brings about significant developments in the history and life of humanity is gradually increasing. The mines, whose names are given to historical ages, have been a necessary source of raw materials for human beings to survive. Today, mines are one of the factors that directly affect the country's economy. Gold, one of them, is a mine whose history is based on ancient history, its production has gained importance especially in recent years as a result of increasing demand and depleted resources. Turkey is a rich country with a 2% share in the world, with gold deposits of different geological characteristics and reserves of 513 tons. In addition, gold exploration activities continue intensively in Turkey, and annual production has increased to 42 tons. Despite this gold potential and production in Turkey, due to the fact that domestic demand is higher than production, the demand for gold cannot be met and it is imported. Gümüşhane is one of the provinces where gold production is intense. In this study, the importance of gold mining and gold mining in Gümüşhane are discussed by giving information about the history of gold mining.
