Discovering seminal works with marker papers

Abstract: Bibliometric information retrieval in databases can employ different strategies. Commonly, queries are performed by searching in title, abstract and/or author keywords (author vocabulary). More advanced queries employ database keywords to search in a controlled vocabulary. Queries based on search terms can be augmented with their citing papers if a research field cannot be curtailed by the search query alone. Here, we present another strategy to discover the most important papers of a research field. A marker … Show more

“…Although CAplus has a focus on chemistry, neighboring research areas such as physics and biology are often better covered than one might think. From our experience, CAplus has a broad coverage of the DFT literature (see also a very recent RPYS analysis on the topic of DFT using different databases [75]). Therefore, the major limitation of our study should be missing cited references in publications before 1996.…”

“…Very recently, Haunschild and Marx [75] compared co-citation RPYS (RPYS-CO) results using Becke [25] as a marker paper with RPYS results by Haunschild et al [68] which were based on CAS data. Haunschild and Marx [75] used Web of Science and Microsoft Academic as databases which have cited references for all indexed papers. They found a surprisingly high agreement between RPYS results based on CAS data and RPYS-CO results based on Web of Science data and Microsoft Academic data.…”

“…They named this RPYS variant RPYS-CO. In another very recent study, (Haunschild & Marx, 2019) compare their own results of a RPYS on density functional theory, a very frequently applied method in computational chemistry (Haunschild, Barth, & Marx, 2016), with an RPYS-CO using one single seminal paper with a high citation count and find a striking similarity with the results of the analysis based on a search in controlled vocabulary. Encouraged by these results, we set out here to investigate all publications co-cited with one highly-cited marker paper, a choice discussed with and corroborated by the long term leader of the Oldenburg group: The interrelationship and characteristic distribution of direct, diffuse and total solar radiation (Liu & Jordan, 1960).…”

“…Specifically, several related works recognize the usefulness of these works in both supply chain management literature [17] and reverse logistics [18]. This part of the analysis identifies the pillars of the literature and points out the main future lines of trends that have subsequently developed over the years [13]. This step contributes to knowledge structuring by a global vision that reflects the first contributions of this area of research.…”

“…The analysis of seminal works, sometimes called pivotal or landmark studies, is recognized in the literature review in management ( [13][14][15][16]). Specifically, several related works recognize the usefulness of these works in both supply chain management literature [17] and reverse logistics [18].…”
