This article explores how Indonesian political actors associate themselves with Ulamas through Twitter visual messages to symbolise Islamic piety during the Indonesian Presidential Election 2019. Despite past political events, socio-political dynamics are still relevant to understanding the current political climate. This article employed a qualitative approach by observing and analysing messages from @jokowi, the official account of the elected President, during the political contestation period. Specifically, multimodal analysis was used to examine visual data. We conclude that Islamic piety symbolisms were strategically used as a political instrument during the Election. Political actors, such as Jokowi, associated themselves with Islamic piety symbols and other Islamic cultural attributes to construct a certain strong image and appeal to the Indonesian Muslim voters. An association with Islamic piety symbols could boost his image and appeal to voters.

Mecca and Medina, also known as Haramayn, are the two holy cities of Muslims and serve as the intellectual and spiritual centers of the Islamic world. At the beginning of the 20th century, religious students from the archipelago visited these cities to perform the pilgrimage and continued their studies. While researchers have uncovered the role and network of Indonesian ulama, not all ulama groups have been successfully uncovered. This article examines the role of the Mandailing ulama, particularly those with the surname Nasution, in preserving religious sciences in the Tapanuli Residency in the early 20th century. The ulama discussed in this study include Sheikh ‘Abd al-Qadir al-Mandily (Nasution), Sheikh Muhammad Ja’far Nasution, and Sheikh Musthafa Husein Nasution. This is a literature study with a historical approach. Kuntowijoyo’s historical research model serves as a reference in writing this article, and al-Ghazâlî’s opinion about the classification of knowledge is the main theory used to analyze research topics. This article argues that the Mandailing ulama, particularly those with the surname Nasution, actively preserved religious sciences in the Tapanuli Residency after studying at Masjidilharam in Mecca, Saudi Arabia. They later became the primary agents of teaching religious sciences according to the Sunni Islamic tradition in their respective areas. The results of this study have implications for the strengthening of literature and theory on the role and network of Indonesian ulama.

The research problem in this study is that there are only a few schools under the auspices of the Al-Washliyah organization, and there are almost no public schools in North Sumatra that integrate Al-Washliyah values into the learning process. However, Al-Washliyah values are highly aligned with the national education goals of developing an intelligent, characterful, morally upright, and independent society. This is because teachers do not yet have the appropriate strategies and learning models to integrate these values. Therefore, this research aims to develop a VCT (Values-Centered Teaching) learning model based on the ideas of Al-Washliyah figures. The research follows a research and development (R&D) approach. The research design follows the 4D model by Thiagarajan, Semmel, and Semmel. The research subjects consist of 135 Madrasah Aliyah students. Data collection is done through interviews, observations, open questionnaires, expert validation sheets, and practicality assessment sheets for the model. The collected data is then analyzed using SPSS version 25.0. The results of the study show that the developed model has high validity and reliability. Therefore, the developed model can be used as a learning model to integrate the values of Al-Washliyah figures into the learning process.
