Odd‐hydrogen (any hydrogen‐oxygen radical containing but a single hydrogen atom) plays a key role in atmospheric chemistry, particularly in the chemistry of ozone. Notable is also the role played by water in atmospheric and environmental chemistry. Without attempting a broad coverage, the present survey focuses on the electronic structure and dynamics of odd‐hydrogen and related water‐mediated complexes with impact in atmospheric chemistry, with emphasis on systems studied at the author's laboratory. Review oriented, it contains some ab initio results for HO3 and insights on hydrogen bonding and the role of water in mediating HOx reactions with ozone that have not appeared elsewhere. While providing an account on the status of the title topical issues, it is hoped that it may encourage new research directions. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

The chemical properties of organic tetroxides, that is, compounds of a general formula ROOOOR (R = H or organic radical) are discussed. The following tetroxides are considered: hydrogen tetroxide HOOOOH, dialkyl tetroxides ROOOOR, hydrotetroxides ROOOOH, and five‐membered cyclic tetroxides—tetroxolanes. Hydrogen tetroxide is formed via self‐reaction of HOO · radicals on singlet PES; hydroperoxy radical interaction plays an important role in the chemistry of atmosphere. The formation and subsequent decay of tetroxides are discussed in detail. Similar self‐reaction of alkylperoxy radicals leads to organic tetroxides. Its irreversible transformation occurs in two directions depending on the tetroxide structure: the facile homolysis of ROOOOR bond or the induced by αCH bond radical decomposition of tetroxide into hydroperoxy, alkoxy radicals, and carbonyl compound. The latter interaction is the key step in the new mechanism of peroxy radical recombination suggested on the base of extensive analysis of available literature. Hydrotetroxides show properties similar to both HOOOOH and dialkyl tetroxides. A possibility of tetroxolane generation in the reaction of ozone with carbonyl compounds is discussed.

The review discusses the results of studies on the chemistry of organic trioxides ROOOR (R = H or an organic radical) carried out in the past years. The spectral identification, structure, thermal stability and chemical properties of HOOOH, HOOO ⋅ , hydrotrioxides, open‐chain and cyclic trioxides (including fullerene ozonides) are described. The significance of trioxides for biochemistry, environmental chemistry, and organic synthesis is much higher than it was believed previously. The chemical reactions that these compounds undergo resemble those of peroxides. However, the temperature range in which trioxide reactions occur is shifted considerably towards low temperatures. Homolytic decomposition at one of the OO bonds is the most typical reaction of trioxides. Trioxides are liable to induced and catalytic decomposition. Hydrotrioxides demonstrate high oxidative activity. Decomposition of some trioxides is accompanied by efficient generation of singlet oxygen.
