Discovery and cross-section measurement of neutron-rich isotopes in the element range from neodymium to platinum with the FRS

Abstract: Abstract:Using the high-resolution performance of the fragment separator FRS at GSI we have discovered 60 new neutron-rich isotopes in the atomic number range of 60⩽Z⩽78. The new isotopes were unambiguously identified in reactions with a 238U beam impinging on a Be target at 1 GeV/nucleon. The production cross-section for the new isotopes have been measured down to the pico-barn level and compared with predictions of different model calculations. For elements above hafnium fragmentation is the domin… Show more

“…Proton removal reactions from high energy heavy projectiles like U and Pb can also be used for the production of neutron rich nuclei in the lead region [3], but the reaction cross section drops drastically for more neutron rich products (see Fig.2). Due to the low intensity of radioactive beams and low neutron fluxes in existing nuclear reactors the second and third methods seem to be unrealizable.…”

“…A 1000 A·MeV 238 U projectile beam with an intensity of 10 9 /s impinged on a 1.6 g/cm 2 thick beryllium target placed at the entrance of the FRS [2,11]. The heavy reaction products Z>60 were separated with the FRS operated in an overall achromatic ion-optical mode.…”

“…The contribution of each reaction type was determined for the observed nuclides by the ABRABLA code [14]. In Figure 3 an example is shown for the measured Sm and Pt isotopes [2] compared with different theoretical predictions. Results from a previous FRS experiment using a hydrogen production are included (open circles) [15].…”

“…The osmium isotopes currently represent the best opportunity to probe the evolution of nuclear structure across the 82 N 126 neutron shell. The existence of the osmium isotopes in an uninterrupted sequence from 161 Os 85 [1] to 203 Os 127 [2] has been established [2,3], while excited states have been identified in these known nuclei below 200 Os 124 [4] with the exception of the odd-mass isotopes below N = 89. The excitation level schemes across the shell reveal the transitions between the single-particle and collective regimes as a function of neutron number.…”
