Discovery of Rodrigama Gauld in the Old World, with description of two new species (Hymenoptera, Ichneumonidae, Poemeniinae)

Abstract: Two new species of the genus Rodrigama Gauld are described: R. gauldi sp. n. from Ryukyus, Japan and R. takakuwai sp. n. from Taiwan. Th e genus Rodrigama was known from a single Costa Rican species and these new species are the fi rst representatives of the genus in the Old World. Th e distribution of these species in the Palaearctic/Oriental Region reinforces the hypothesis that the Poemeniinae originated in the north temperate region and diversifi ed into tropical regions, and that the Costa Rican R. gamezi… Show more

“…Rodrigama has a disjunct distribution, it is found in Central America, Japan, Taiwan, the Far East of China, Israel, and now in South Korea. It is strongly supported that the distribution pattern of this genus is a relic from a more widely distributed basal lineage of Pimpliformes in the Old World (Wahl and Gauld 1998;Matsumoto and Broad 2011;Broad and Kuslitzky 2019).…”

“…Diagnosis. Genus Rodrigama can be distinguished from all other poemeniines by the following characteristics: paired antero-lateral and postero-lateral oblique grooves delimiting a central rhombic area on the second tergite; fused tergite and sternite of the first tergite (Wahl and Gauld 1998;Matsumoto and Broad 2011).…”

“…', rather than '0', for taxa lacking fore wing vein 3rs-m. Following Matsumoto and Broad (2011), Rodrigama Gauld has been re-coded for character 19 (occipital carina is dorsally incomplete), 26 (epicnemial carina is present) and 34 (hind coxa is elongate). Note that Rossemia Humala is the valid name for Wahl and Gauld's Sweaterella (Humala, 2003).…”

“…According to Wahl and Gauld (1998) the Pimpliformes arose in the north temperate region and diversified into the tropical regions, first into the Old World tropics, then into the New World tropics. After the recent discovery of the primitive genus Rodrigama Gauld, 1991, from Taiwan and Japan (Matsumoto & Broad 2011), the genus Ganodes Townes, 1957 remained the only genus of the subfamily restricted to the Neotropical region. Ganodes is one of the most derived genera of poemeniines and comprises seven described species, two from Brazil, one from Brazil and Venezuela, and one each from Argentina, Costa Rica, Mexico, and Venezuela (Gauld 1991;Wahl & Gauld 1998;Díaz 2008).…”
