Discovery of Syndiotactic Polystyrene: Its Synthesis and Impact

Abstract: This Editorial discusses two seminal Macromolecules publications by Ishihara et al. concerning the synthesis of syndiotactic polystyrene. In a 1986 communication (Macromolecules 1986(Macromolecules , 19, 2464, the first preparation of this semicrystalline polymer was reported. A 1988 full paper (Macromolecules 1988, 21, 3356) described the enabling polymerization catalyst system, based on methylaluminoxane-activated half-metallocene titanium complexes. These two highly cited publications inspired a large body… Show more

“…sPS is utilized in temperature resistant automotive and home appliance applications and its biaxially oriented film is used in high-temperature resistant films, e.g., ovenable packaging. However, to overcome its inherent brittleness and poor impact Extending Alkenes' Value Chain to Functionalized Polyolefins DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.5772/intechopen.99078 strength, nanocomposites of sPS reinforced with glass or carbon fibers, mineral fillers or elastomers are developed [48].…”

“…[ 1‐9 ] The resulting syndiotactic polystyrene (sPS) exhibits excellent chemical and physical properties such as high crystallinity, melting point, modulus of elasticity, low dielectric constant and excellent resistance to heat and chemicals, which enable its application as engineering plastic. [ 10‐17 ] However, sPS cannot be synthesized by radical and ionic polymerizations. The coordination insertion polymerization of styrene catalyzed by organometallic catalysts offers opportunities to precisely synthesize syndiotactic polystyrene.…”

“…Syndiotactic polystyrene (sPS) has continued to attract the interest of scientists nearly four decades after its first preparation report. 1–3 Furthermore, this new polystyrene with high crystallinity was reported thirty years after the first isotactic polystyrene by Natta et al 4 Notably, titanium and organo-aluminium compound-based catalyst systems lead to the high stereoregularity of sPS. 5,6 One of the biggest features of sPS is its high crystallinity.…”
