Discrete and Polymeric Self‐Assembled Palladium(II) Complexes as Supramolecular Gelators

Abstract: Supramolecular gels prepared from low-molecular-weight gelators have been extensively explored. However, the exploitation of discrete or polymeric metal complexes as gelators is a relatively recent trend. The synthesis of self-assembled coordination complexes from palladium(II) and selected ligands is well established, but the potential of these complexes as gelators is a less explored treasure. Herein we focus on the gelation abilities of some self-assembled palladium(II) complexes and the resulting unique pr… Show more

“…As for members of the group with lowest nuclearity [Pd 2 L 4 ], a large variety of the topologically most simple lantern‐shaped cages (Figure 1 a) were reported by Steel, [3b] Fujita, [12] Yoshizawa, [13] Chand, [3e, 14] Crowley, [3f, 15] our group [8, 16] and others [17] . Recently, we introduced the first example of a self‐penetrating [Pd 2 L 4 ] topology, albeit composed of two different ligands in a heteroleptic fashion (Figure 1 b).…”

“…The gels obtained from discrete Pd(II) based self-assemblies include mononuclear, binuclear, trinuclear, and dodecanuclear complexes. 110 The fine tuning of the required conditions can facilitate the formation of gel. Chand and co-workers observed the gel formation from the solution of an in situ prepared discrete Pd 3 L 6 type complex, [Pd 3 (L21) 6 ](NO 3 ) 6 , 26 crafted with benzimidazole functionalized ligands above a critical concentration (20 mM corresponding to Pd(II) units) of reactants.…”
