Discrimination of the geographical origins of rice based on polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons

Abstract: Over the past few decades, several techniques have been applied to identify the geographical origins of rice products. In this study, the chemical characterization of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) was carefully conducted by analysing PAHs in rice samples collected from private sector planting areas located in Bali and Yogyakarta, Indonesia (i.e. ID; n = 20), west sides of Malaysia (i.e. MY; n = 20), Mandalay, Legend, Myingyan, Myanmar (i.e. MM; n = 20), northern parts of Lao PDR (i.e. LA; n = 20), ce… Show more

“…This sophisticated approach is exceedingly effective for extensively classifying comparatively large amounts of raw data with noticeably lower variables than the original dataset [29]. Consequently, PCA has been comprehensively applied to the source categorisation of various chemical constituents in several environmental compartments ( [1,21,22,[31][32][33][34][35][36]. Additionally, IBM SPSS Statistics v. 25 coupled with VARIMAX rotation was used for the PCA.…”

“…Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are a class of organic compounds formed by carbon and hydrogen atoms, with chemical structures consisting of two or more aromatic rings condensed together . They are widespread environmental contaminants present in different compartments, such as air, soils, sediments and agricultural products (Pongpiachan, 2022;Pongpiachan et al, 2022a). PAHs derivatives such as nitrated PAHs (NPAHs) and oxygenated PAHs (OPAHs) have substitutions of one or more hydrogen atoms by oxygen and nitrogen atoms, respectively .…”
