Discriminative validity of the lower and upper quarter Y balance test performance: a comparison between healthy trained and untrained youth

Abstract: Background The Lower (YBT-LQ) and Upper (YBT-UQ) Quarter Y Balance Test have been widely used for the assessment of dynamic balance and shoulder mobility/stability, respectively. However, investigations on the validity of the two tests in youth are lacking. Therefore, we performed two studies to determine discriminative validity of the YBT-LQ (study 1) and the YBT-UQ (study 2) in healthy youth. Methods Sixty-nine male soccer players (age: 14.4 ± 1.9 yrs) and 69 age-matched untrained male subjects (14.3 ± 1.6 … Show more

“…The Upper Quarter Y Balance test (YBT-UQ) is a widely used test procedure carried out in the field to obtain valid and reliable measurements of shoulder mobility/stability in healthy youth [1,2]. Carrying out the YBT-UQ test requires the subject to assume a push-up position on the floor (Fig 1A -1D) supported by one arm and reach as far as possible to the (a) medial (MD), (b) inferolateral (IL), and (c) superolateral (SL) direction with the other arm [3].…”

“…Participant’s LL was determined from the anterior superior iliac spine to the most distal aspect of the medial malleolus [ 6 ]. The YBT-LQ test is a valid (concurrent, discriminative, and predictive) and reliable (moderate to excellent) tool to assess balance performance in youth [ 7 9 ].…”

“…Y-balance test A standard procedure for the YBT was adopted using a YBT kit (Functional Movement Systems®, Chatham, USA) [ 45 ] for dynamic balance evaluation. The kit is composed of a centralized platform and three pipes which connect to the platform.…”
