Abstract

Mr. GREGORY, President, said, he was sure all would agree that these Papers were not only valuable in themselves, but that they contained much that was suggestive to the engineer, and which would doubtless raise an interesting discussion. He could not help thinking, however, that some of the elements of calculation were of so variable and uncertain a character that it would be di5cult to accept any formula of the nature proposed by Colonel O'Connell, as of universal application.The Rev. J. C. CLUTTERBUCK said, what he knew on the subject of the Paper was confined to a narrow area-the Thames Basinthough he had studied that area for many years. He &d not believe there was any formula which could be fitted to rivers in general ; there were so many causes whence floods originated, and so many by which they were modified.These must be clearly understood and separately treated.
