Discussion of PET Workshop Reports, Including Recommendations of PET Data Analysis Working Group

Abstract: Summary: On May 1-2, 1989, a PET Data Analysis Working Group convened to consider positron emission tomography (PET) methodology and data analysis. The papers presented and the recommendations of the Group are reviewed. The Group recommended that a standard phantom of the human brain be used by different institu tions to examine machine and data reconstruction PET variables. Interinstitutional comparisons could be aided by using a standard three-dimensional coordinate system. Deformations within individual dis… Show more

“…A larger sample of at-risk subjects with repeat scans, and a group of A D -controls with repeat scans would provide even stronger evidence for the utility of this method in the early detection of AD. Finally, like the correlational approach, additional anatomical and physiological meth ods will strengthen the conclusions of these covariance analytic methods [37], In summary, the present findings provided additional validation for two previously derived discriminant func tions for identifying an AD pattern of frontal-parietal rCMRglc interdependencies, and suggested the utility of these functions for the early detection of AD in individu als at risk for AD.…”

“…Furthermore, a more quantitative definition of levels of confi dence regarding group classification, to reduce false-negative errors, has been suggested (McCrory and Ford, 1991). Finally, like the correlational ap proach, additional anatomical and physiological methods will strengthen the conclusions of these covariance analytic methods (Rapoport, 1991a).…”

“…The discussion so far has assumed that the job of NI is to confirm or disconfirm hypotheses. An alternative view of NI is that it provides exploratory, rather than confirmatory, data (Rapoport 1991, A142; McKeown et al. 2006).…”
