Discussion on the Structure Stability and the Luminescence Switch under Irradiation of a Ce‐Doped Elpasolite Compound

Abstract: Ce-doped Rb2 KInF6 elpasolite has the potential for tunable luminescence due to an unusual reversible redox process between the cerium and indium cations. Coupled with a deep understanding of the luminescence properties, XRD analysis and DFT calculations are used to locate the doping elements in the host lattice. The origin explanation of the charge-transfer mechanism that causes a decrease or increase in the blue-green cerium emission in opposition to the red indium emission is discussed regarding the crystal… Show more

“…contribution peaking at 510 nm, which seems not to be affected by the temperature, and the monovalent indium contribution composed of the A T band (400 nm/25 000 cm −1 ) detected only at low temperatures and the A X band (at approximately 650 nm/15 300 cm −1 ). 15,17,18 The excitation spectra that correspond to the monovalent indium absorption (λ em = 400 nm, 650 nm) are formed by a unique band at 255 nm (39 215 cm −1 ) that peaks in the same energy range as the range of the new emitting centre.…”

“…Various emission wavelengths can be obtained as demonstrated in a previous study. 7,15 These materials also show photo-chromo-luminescent properties, resulting in a variation of emission wavelengths after UV radiation exposure. These results reflect the variation of the oxidation state of the cerium and indium cations, according to the equation 2Ce 3+ + In 3+ ↔ 2Ce 4+ + In + .…”

“…rhombohedral-orthorhombic-tetrahedral. Recently, we proposed an ab-initio calculation of the fluorine ions positions in Rb2KInF6 double perovskites (elpasolite systems) correlated to octahedral tilts from the same consideration than in this paper (strict respect of the valence law) but, by manipulating the atomic positioning of the Fanions [27].…”

“…Concerning the Ce-doped Rb 2 KInF 6 elpasolite compound, the spectral distributions reflected the substitution of In 3+ by Ce 3+ in the regular octahedra but also the fact that a minor part of Ce 3+ ions is located in the cuboctahedron. [5] Under UV irradiation, a redox phenomenon between the Ce/In ions occurs leading to a reversible luminescence switch based on the following equilibrium: 2Ce 3+ +In 3+ ⇄2Ce 4+ +In + . Such a phenomenon is rare and its origin is due to the peculiar crystal structure and composition of the studied material.…”

“…The redox process is reversible under adequate irradiation or heat treatment temperature. The sensitized materials are stable over two decades, showing hence perfectly bi-stable state [4,5]. (iii) Emission of ZnO is strongly related to the synthesis route.…”
