Discussion: Replacement of Shaped Textured Implants with Round Smooth Implants in Breast Reconstruction: Long-Term Outcomes

Abstract

W e commend Ayyala et al. for their longitudinal study of patients undergoing replacement of shaped, textured breast implants with round, smooth implants in the setting of subpectoral breast reconstruction. In an analysis of 307 patients, reflecting 534 implants, relatively low rates of postoperative complications were observed in addition to clinically significant increases in postoperative BREAST-Q scores. 1 The authors conclude that exchange of textured to smooth implants is safe, does not sacrifice aesthetic outcome, and may even be associated with decreased rates of capsular contracture. 1
