Disease severity and quality of life in a follow-up study of patients with occupational contact dermatitis

Abstract: QoL was generally reduced in this group of patients with occupational contact dermatitis, with some correlation between severity and DLQI. The DLQI was a more sensitive measurement of QoL than the SF-36 in this patient population. Incorporating disease severity rating with a QoL questionnaire is valuable in occupational contact dermatitis and is recommended.

“…Comparing SSc to other dermatoses, subscale scores for SSc in all dimensions were significantly poorer than or comparable to patients with occupational contact dermatitis [15], ichthyosis [16], non-melanoma skin cancer [17], and contact eczema [18] (Table 1). SSc patients had better results in mental health compared to patients with long-standing nail disease [20], vitiligo [21], chronic skin diseases [14], and health care workers with work related disease [22], The SF-36 scores in patients with atopic dermatitis vary and can be better or worse than in SSc [19, 23].…”

“…Two studies using the DLQI, found a moderate effect on the daily activities domain [33, 39]. Two other studies that used the DLQI but did not document the scores reported that 23% [30] and 45.7% [35] of participants had interference in this domain.…”

“…EBS has a HRQoL score similar to atopic dermatitis, and DDEB similar to psoriasis (26). On the MCS scale, DDEB and RDEB have the best recorded HRQoL score, while EBS scores similar to occupational contact dermatitis, and JEB to psoriasis and hand eczema (25,26). In the comparison of the Skindex-29 results with other dermatological diseases (Fig.…”
