Disinfecting the air with far-ultraviolet light

Abstract: Ultraviolet light to clean the air typically has to be positioned away from people. Devices using shorter UV wavelengths could change this. By Eric Bender David Brenner studies the effects of far-ultraviolet light.

“…GUV 222 therefore has the potential to dramatically affect the chemical composition of indoor air and may lead to the formation of chemical species that are hazardous to human health. However, the extent and nature of this impact remain quite uncertain, even as GUV 222 is being deployed in indoor spaces . Two very recent experimental studies , demonstrate O 3 production from GUV 222 , but these do not examine the overall effects on indoor air quality (including the production of OH, OVOCs, and SOA) by GUV 222 .…”

“…However, the extent and nature of this impact remain quite uncertain, even as GUV 222 is being deployed in indoor spaces. 20 Two very recent experimental studies 21,22 demonstrate O 3 production from GUV 222 , but these do not examine the overall effects on indoor air quality (including the production of OH, OVOCs, and SOA) by GUV 222 . To the best of our knowledge, the only published work to do so is a box-modeling study by Peng et al 23 That work predicted that 222 nm irradiation could lead to elevated levels of O 3 and other secondary species relative to nonilluminated conditions, especially under low-ventilation conditions.…”

“…The use of low wavelengths has recently emerged as a safer way to use UV-light. 49 In a nutshell, 222 nm interacts strongly with the proteins of dead cells at the surface of skins and does not penetrate in the epiderma as much as other UV wavelengths. 50 Using 222 nm is a promising alternative to comply with the principles for safety inherent to Green Chemistry.…”
