Disk degenerative disease in childhood: Scheuermann's disease, Schmorl's nodes, and the limbus vertebra: MRI findings in 12 patients

Abstract: Twelve pediatric patients were studied with MRI. All had various disk problems including Scheuermann's disease, Schmorl's nodes and limbus vertebrae. All patients shared loss of disk height, altered disk hydration and variable herniation of nuclear material.

“…Continuity of disc material beneath the detached marginal fragment(s) has been demonstrated in cadaver preparations (Schmorl & Junghanns, 1971: Fig. 170), and in living patients by discography (Ghelman & Freiberger, 1976) and MRI (Hennales et al, 1993;Swischuk et al, 1998). Bone at the edges of the defect on the vertebral body becomes somewhat sclerotic due to remodelling of the lesion margins (Yagan, 1984;Hennales et al, 1993).…”

“…However, because almost all lumbar structures can elicit pain, 7 it is reasonable to assume that morphologic changes of the lumbar spine play a role in LBP. Different types of endplate changes (Scheuermann disease, Schmorl nodes) have previously been described in relation to LBP in children and adolescents, 8 and disc herniations have also been found. 9 To identify "abnormalities" in young lumbar spines, it is necessary to define the limits of "normality."…”
