“…SES also impacts health behaviors, such as medication adherence in PLH, which is critical, as poor adherence is associated with declines in cognitive functioning (Ettenhofer et al, 2010) and therefore may partially explain underlying cognitive disparities in PLH (Aidala et al, 2016;Falagas et al, 2008;Marquine et al, 2018). Thus, it is important to examine whether SES impacts PM given its relationship to health behaviors (Ettenhofer et al, 2010;Zogg et al, 2012), particularly among Latinx PLH who face worse medication adherence rates (Rivera Mindt et al, 2020;Robbins et al, 2012). “…For the parent study, participants were included if they were living with HIV, 18 to 80 years old, proficient in English (oral/written), and identified as either Latinx (any race) or NLW. Participants were required to be independently taking their prescribed antiretroviral medication for at least 12 weeks to be included due to the primary aims of the parent study (Rivera Mindt et al, 2020). Participants were excluded if they met Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders - Fourth Edition criteria for a current or past psychotic disorder or bipolar disorder, as assessed by a structured clinical interview (Composite International Diagnostic Interview; World Health Organization, 1993) administered by the study staff.…”

“…However, the role that acculturation plays in this association remains ambiguous. While greater acculturation has been linked to increased medication adherence among Arab-Americans ( Tailakh et al, 2016 ) and Chinese-Americans ( Jin and Acharya, 2016 ), studies exploring this association in Hispanic populations have yielded mixed results ( Padilla et al, 2011 , Hall et al, 2016 , Rivera Mindt et al, 2020 ). Furthermore, to our knowledge, prior studies have relied on pharmacy fill data, which are poorly suited to assessing the influence of Hispanic ethnicity and linguistic acculturation on daily implementation of a medication regimen.…”
