Disparities in Exposure to Intimate Partner Violence Among Transgender/Gender Nonconforming and Sexual Minority Primary Care Patients

Abstract: Our findings support that IPV is prevalent across genders and sexual orientations. Clinical guidelines for IPV screening should be expanded to include TGNC individuals and not just cisgender women. Future research could explore the complex patterns by which individuals of different genders are at increased risk for different types of IPV, and investigate the best ways to screen TGNC patients and support TGNC survivors.

“…11 Another study examined the prevalence of IPV in the past year, finding that transgender women experienced six times higher odds of physical IPV than cisgender women. 12 This study also provided evidence for examining IPV prevalence by gender identity subgroups, finding that of all transgender groups, the odds of experiencing IPV were highest among transgender women. 12 In addition to experiencing higher levels of IPV than cisgender individuals, transgender individuals also may experience IPV in distinct ways.…”

“…We hypothesized that because of their elevated risk of violent victimization (Coulter et al, 2017;Valentine et al, 2017), transwomen in prostitution might, therefore, have higher rates of TBI than other women in prostitution. A secondary purpose of this pilot study was to evaluate this hypothesis in this pilot sample.…”

“…In a clinical sample of patients at an urban health center, past-12 month intimate partner violence (IPV) rates were elevated for transgender women (12.1%), transgender men (6.6%), and non-binary individuals (8.2%) relative to cisgender women (2.7%) (p<0.05). [31] Another study of college students accessing collegebased mental health counseling from the Center for Collegiate Mental Health's 2012-2016 database, found non-binary transgender individuals had higher rates of harassment, sexual abuse, and exposure to traumatic events than binary transgender students. [19] Understanding gender differences in experiences of victimization and violence within the transgender community is critical, as these experiences have been linked to poor mental health in transgender populations.…”
