Dispatching of a Wind Farm Incorporated With Dual-Battery Energy Storage System Using Model Predictive Control

Abstract: The battery energy storage system (BESS) integrated with a wind farm is an efficient way to smooth wind power fluctuations and improve wind farm dispatchability. The presented study proposed a model predictive control (MPC)-based power dispatch strategy for a wind farm incorporated with dualbattery energy storage system (DBESS). The state space model of the active power balance of the wind farm incorporated with DBESS was established to analyze the operation mode of the DBESS. The MPC was then applied to acqui… Show more

“…Another option for the BESS connection is a battery bank with a DC/AC PCS to be connected with the AC bus. A transformer can be installed at BESS output before local AC bus 39,40,41 or after local AC bus 42 to finally being connected with the grid. A few possible PV‐wind‐BESS structures are shown in Figure 5.…”

“…While providing fluctuation smoothing service, an SOC feedback method is presented in 90 to avoid overcharging/discharging. In favor of maintaining a constant wind power output at its terminal, a battery storage system can store/supply surplus/shortfall in the wind power system 42,91 . In order to maintain proportionate economic expenditure and smoothing performance, an optimal sized and fuzzy controlled charging/discharging strategy for BESS is proposed in 92 that concluded BESS as a cost‐effective solution for wind farm owners.…”

“…MPC-based coordinated scheduling frameworks for wind generation and energy storage are early reported in [6], [7]. In [8], a wind farm incorporated with dualbattery energy storage system is dispatched via MPC. In [9], an approach of sizing ESS is presented from the perspective of facilitating the integration of the wind farm; MPC is considered in the inner control loop that makes the actual output power follow the set-point power by charging/discharging ESS subject to operational constraints.…”
