Dispersion of the Corrected QT and JT Interval in the Electrocardiogram of Alcoholic Patients

Abstract: Persons who consume various alcoholic beverages excessively and for a long time have significantly higher dispersions of the QTc and JTc, intervals and they have a significantly higher estimation of relative risk for the prolonged QTc interval and higher QTc dispersion than the control group, i.e., higher risk of arrhythmias.

“…higher risk of arrhythmias. 131 Chronic ethanol consumption has been shown to cause a significant deterioration in left ventricular diastolic function, irrespective of its effect on blood pressure and left ventricular mass. 109 Systolic left ventricular dysfunction is relatively common even in asymptomatic alcoholics, but whether diastolic function is also altered is much less well studied.…”

“…Mainly chronic alcoholics and individuals with coexisting heart diseases causing structural and functional myocardial changes are predisposed to arrhythmias (for a review, see [8,35,38]. The potential arrhythmogenic effect of alcohol may be further increased particularly under an increased sympathetic tone, usage of drugs, ionic imbalance or polymorphisms/mutations in genes encoding ionic channels [16,31,33,43,48].…”
