This study investigated the potential components of an integrated management of Loranthaceae species (mistletoes) which constitute a major constraint to the survival and fruit production of many trees such as Vitellaria paradoxa in West Africa. Three types of pruning, five doses of each of two herbicides and host resistance were evaluated in mistletoe-infested parklands. Natural enemies were surveyed with a view to biological control. Pruning of the host branch along with the parasite's haustorium (endophytic system) led to the total elimination of the parasite. When the endophytic system was spared, the time of pruning and species of parasite significantly influenced the number of sprout stalks per tuff. Their interaction was also significant. Death of at least 80% of treated Loranthaceae tufts was recorded for doses of 15 g l -1 of glyphosate and 20 g l -1of 2,4-D. The artificial infestation of stands with parasite seeds revealed the likely existence of genetic resistance to mistletoe in V. paradoxa. The agroforestry parkland survey showed that birds, chiefly Pogoniulus chrysonocus, and insects are potential natural enemies of Loranthaceae. Results showed that Loranthaceae control could be achieved with techniques already used to successfully manage weeds. However, there is need to improve control components and their integration to successfully manage mistletoes in Burkina Faso.

Investigations were conducted in six farm fields (1.5 to 3 ha each) in Burkina Faso with objectives to (1) study adult Smicronyx spp. (Coleoptera: Curculionidae) population dynamics during Strign hermonthica (Scrophulariaceae) seed-pod production, (2) assess the impact of different population levels of Smicronyx spp. on St. hermonthica capsule production and, (3) estimate Smicronyx female reproductive success in seed-pod galls. A Univac portable sampler was used to sample adult Smicronyx spp. and St. hermonthica densities were assessed using a i m 2 metal quadrat. Fifty St. hermonthica shoots per field were sampled each week. Before the emergence of St. hermonthica, Smicronyx adults were found on nearby Striga aspera (Willd) Benth. fields. Striga hermonthica shoots produced on average ca. 24 seed capsules each, while each female Smicronyx galled froml2 to 32 seed pods. Seed-pod galling alone was not sufficiently high to be considered as a successful reduction factor for St. hermonlliica seed production in natural conditions. Smicronyx spp. adult population levels decreased during the St. hermonlliica capsule production period. Increased population levels of Smicronyx spp. resulted in higher percentages of St. hermonthica seed-pod galls, suggesting that augmentative techniques, if used as part of an integrated control programme could be a worthwhile strategy.

The taxonomy of three species of Smicronyx that are potential biocontrol agents of witchweeds (Striga spp.) in West Africa is revised. The two most abundant species are identified as Smicronyx (Afrosmicronyx) umbrinus Hustache and S. (Smicronyx) guineanus Voss. A third species is described as Smicronyx (Afrosmicronyx) dorsomaculatus Cox, sp. n. Diagnostic descriptions and a key, to separate adults of the three species from each other and from Sharpia bella Faust, are presented. Mature larvae of the three Smicronyx species are separated through a key and diagnoses. A lectotype is selected for Smicronyx umbrinus. All available host and distribution data are summarized for each species.
