Displacements in Eccentric Annuli During Primary Cementing in Deviated Wells

Abstract: This paper presents an experimental study of the displacement process in a 60 0 deviated laboratory well with a 55 % eccentric annulus. The inner pipe was lying near the bottom of the simulated wellbore. In this geometry the displacing fluid have a tendency to flow in the upper, wide part of the annulus, and to bypass mud in the narrow part of the annulus. The results from the tests were applied to practical field operations.

“…However, the occurrence of GM and SCVF is higher in deviated wells than in vertical wells, indicating that wellbore deviation is a factor affecting overall wellbore leakage. Mechanical aspects such as casing centralization and cement slumping may contribute to the increased incidence of wellbore leakage in deviated wells (Jakobsen et al 1991).…”

“…The replacement of drilling fluids with cement to establish a barrier and to seal formation pressures hydraulically is the main task to be achieved during plug placement, besides the prime physical properties of the cured cement. Several parameters influencing mud displacement efficiency during plug placement include: hole geometry and inclination, flow rate, degree of turbulence, ECD, cement or mud and spacer design, hole conditioning, rheological behavior, buoyancy and plug stability, pulling out of plug, size of work string, and centralization of work string [3,[22][23][24][25][26]. Obviously, no single technique, will magically make mud displacement and cementing a success.…”
