AbstractThis paper presents an investigative study on space conflicts in areas of housing resettlement that are proposed by urbanization programs of precarious settlements in the Amazon. The study investigates such conflicts in two projects proposed by the Growth Acceleration Program in the city of Belém-PA: The Vila da Barca Project and the Taboquinha Project. The methodology used was verbal consultation and workshop held with residents already resettled by the projects mentioned, as well as non-verbal consultation with residents still living in areas of precarious settlement, since both projects are still ongoing, coexisting, therefore, both the precarious settlement and the proposed housing resettlement. The results, interpreted on the basis of spatial use, point out that these conflicts are raised from architectural design that do not present design strategies such as the use of spatial flexibility, in view its importance to the issue of housing adaptation. These projects, based on the results, also demonstrate that they do not dialogue with local spatial references, breaking apart with cultural habits resulting from amazonian way of inhabiting that is reproduced in urban precarious settlements. The conclusions show that conflicts with the proposed space generate difficulties in the process of housing adaptation, being necessary, thus, the realization of spatial modifications that are made difficult by the absence of space flexibility.
