Disregard of neurological impairments associated with neglected tropical diseases in Africa

Abstract: Neglected tropical diseases (NTDs) affect people in the bottom billion poorest in the world. These diseases are concentrated in rural areas, conflict zones and urban slums in Africa and other tropical areas. While the World Health Organization recognizes seventeen priority NTDs, the list of conditions present in Africa and elsewhere that are eligible to be classified as NTDs is much longer. Although NTDs are generally marginalized, their associated neurological burden has been almost completely disregarded. Ho… Show more

“…Schistosomiasis is one of the high-priority neglected tropical diseases recognized by the WHO 1. This disease remains one of the most prevalent helminthic infections worldwide, as the number of people with active schistosome infections being likely between 391 and 587 million in 78 countries where schistosomiasis is endemic, with an estimated 12,000–200,000 deaths reported annually 2,3.…”

“…Moreover, although little research attention has been paid to diseases such as schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and other psychotic disorders in Africa, some studies have shown that schizophrenia is a major psychiatric diagnosis leading to in-patient admissions on these continents [36]. In addition, the CNS/PNS disease burden in Africa is exacerbated by the numerous but understudied neurological impairments associated with common tropical diseases such as the neglected tropical diseases [7].…”
