Abstract: Cholesterol-laden macrophages are recognized as a major contributor to atherosclerosis. However, recent evidence indicates that vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMC) that accumulate cholesterol and transdifferentiate into a macrophage-like cell (MLC) phenotype also play a role in atherosclerosis.
