Disseminated cutaneous with nasopharyngeal rhinosporidiosis: Light microscopy changes following dapsone therapy

Abstract: We report a case of disseminated cutaneous and nasopharyngeal rhinosporidiosis in a 48-year-old man. The patient complained of a 6-month history of six subcutaneous skin-coloured swellings on the body and a 5-year history of a pea-sized swelling on the inner aspect of the left lower eyelid. Histopathological examination from one of these lesions showed multiple globular cysts packed with endospores that were typical of rhinosporidiosis. We report this case because of its rarity and to describe the morphologica… Show more

“…A case of disseminated rhinosporidiosis with cutaneous, laryngeal and nasopharyngeal involvement has also been reported from India [15]. Another disseminated case of nasopharyngeal rhinosporidiosis in a 48-yearold man with a six-month history of six subcutaneous swellings on the body, and a five-year history of a pea- sized swelling on the inner aspect of the lower eyelid, a rarely known clinical presentation of the disease, has also been reported from Mumbai in Western India [16]. There are several reports of cases of ocular rhinosporidioisis form many parts of India [4,12,[17][18][19][20], some of them dealing with large series of cases [17][18][19].…”

“…Dapsone (diaminodiphenylsulfone) is a relatively safe drug to use, and no major side effects were noticed in this trial (Nair, 1979). In one study, dosage of 100 mg/day of dapsone for several months is recommended in human patient to prevent the recurrence of disease after surgical removal ( Job et al, 1993;Crosara et al, 2009;Madke et al, 2011). Immunological response is not of much value.…”

“…Most cases of nasal tuberculosis are unilateral and lesions can be proliferative, infiltrative or ulcerative or round in shape filled with spores which may be seen bursting through its chitin walls (11). Rhinoscleroma is another differential diagnosis with demonstration of characteristic Mikulicz cells in its histology (12).…”
