Disseminated intravascular coagulation in a dog naturally infected by Leishmania (Leishmania) chagasi from Rio de Janeiro – Brazil

Abstract: BackgroundDisseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC) is an acquired disorder characterized by the activation of intravascular coagulation and excessive fibrin formation. It always occurs in association with other clinical conditions, including parasitic diseases. DIC has been described as a unusual complication in human and canine visceral leishmaniasis.Case presentationDIC was found in a seven-year-old male mongrel dog naturally infected by Leishmania (Leishmania) chagasi. Haemostasis parameters demonstrate… Show more

“…In addition, platelet loss may be associated with hypercoagulability caused by a decreased concentration of antithrombin III due to protein‐losing nephropathy (see below). Disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC) has been occasionally reported in leishmaniotic dogs . However, thrombocytopenia in leishmaniotic dogs can also be due to suppressed platelet production in the bone marrow.…”

“…Activated partial thromboplastin time and prothrombin time may be prolonged; however in most cases, this is likely due to preanalytic factors such as an increased concentration of total globulins, which is frequent in dogs with leishmaniasis. Alternatively, prolonged coagulation times may result from DIC, although this complication is uncommon in leishmaniotic dogs …”

“…Es posible que algunos pacientes desarrollen otras complicaciones tales como la coagulación intravascular diseminada, asociado probablemente a las hemorragias, al consumo de plaquetas y factores de coagulación. Esta complicación no ocurre de manera primaria, suele venir precedida de otros trastornos o condiciones clínicas como sepsis y hemólisis, las cuales coinciden con pacientes infectados por el parásito (15).…”
