“…band to the total excitation calculated in eq 20. The dominant o'levels were 13,11,12, and 9 with respectively 46, 29, 14, and 3% of the total B state population. The observed LIF signal from 3.2 X 109 molecules/cm3 with this ' distribution was 0.87 full scale.…”

“…Several kinetic models at various levels of complexity are used in the interpretation of the results to be presented in section IV. The simplest model considers only the reactions I* + I2 -I(d=40) + I (lc) (ID A more complete kinetic scheme considers each vibrational level of I2 separately, allowing some fraction of the total I* + I2 quenching encounters to populate each vibrational level, and then considers the cascade of vibrational relaxation (dominated by v to u -1 processes of the V-T type): I* + I2 -^I + I2(20<o<45) (lb) 12(20< <45) +M-^* I2(19<i;-1<44) (12) where the known total quenching rate of I* by I2 is given by 45 = klc + k10 (13) u=0 A simple computer program was used to model this kinetic system. It was assumed for simplicity that kr was independent of v. The relative values of fev, i.e., the distribution of I2 vibrational states directly populated by energy transfer, and kT were treated as unknowns and independently varied over a reasonable range of expectations.…”

“…Hence, the population of this state from thermally populated ground state levels by collisions with is endothermic by -2 000 cm-1. Thus, the hypothesis that the A' state serves as an intermediate reservoir, as suggested by Heidner et al [16], cannot be retained as the main process for the first step in I2 dissociation. However, highly excited levels of the X(1 Eg+) state lying 7 882 cm -1 above thermally populated levels (v = 43-45) may play the part of a reservoir « state » in the first step.…”

“…The total rate for Reaction (13) has been measured to be 2 to 3 x 10-11 cm 3 / molecule-sec. 3 9 ,40 There is good qualitative evidence that the branching ratio to form I* (kl3a/kl3) is small, 3 7 although the production of I* from secondary processes (i.e., k 1 5 ) is significant.…”
