Dissociative states in borderline personality disorder and their relationships to psychotropic medication

Abstract: BackgroundAccording to recent data, dissociation may play an important role in borderline personality disorder (BPD), nevertheless specific influences of psychotropic medication on dissociative symptoms in BPD and their therapeutic indications are largely unknown. The purpose of this study was to assess relationships of dissociative symptoms in BPD patients with levels of psychotropic medication and compare these results with a subgroup of patients with schizophrenia.Materials and methodsIn this study, we inve… Show more

“…These domains are primary domains for defining borderline PD based on both, the ICD-11 personality trait qualifiers (11,16,20) and IPDEQ self-assessment. To some extent, the tertiary correlation of both types of emotionally unstable PD (i.e., borderline and impulsive) on the Psychoticism domain confirms the clinical experience with the quasi-psychotic phenomena and transient dissociative states in this group of patients (55,56).…”

“…It was hypothesized that antipsychotic treatment might decrease activation of the anterior cingulate cortex linked to the detection of cognitive conflict, while a resulting decrease of conscious awareness of conflicting stressful experiences may produce dissociative symptoms measured by DES. [ 56 ] Data of this study show that this hypothesis may also apply to patients with schizophrenia.…”

“…While Italian psychiatrists reject this approach as expressed in a questionnaire (Aguglia et al 2021), observations in Spain suggest that LAI formulations of risperidone and aripiprazole may have a positive effect (Garcia-Carmona et al 2021), but most of the patients were comedicated with antidepressants, benzodiazepines, and with oral antipsychotics. There is, however, an intriguing report which described a significant positive correlation between dissociative symptoms in borderline PD but not in schizophrenic patients, and drug doses of antipsychotics and antidepressants administered to the patients (Pec et al 2018).…”
