Dissociative Symptoms Over a Year in a Sample of Sexually Abused Children

Abstract: This study aims to document the evolution of dissociative symptoms over time in preschoolers who disclose sexual abuse. Specifically, this study explores the frequency of dissociative symptoms as a function of child gender. A follow-up evaluation was conducted 1 year after initial disclosure among a sample of 48 sexually abused children, and their results were contrasted with those of a control group composed of 71 non abused children. “…In that vein, results from one of our recent inquiries revealed higher frequencies of dissociative symptoms among a group of 76 sexually abused children aged 4 to 6 than children of the comparison group [53]. These symptoms were found to persist over a period of a year following disclosure [54]. In contrast to children who have experienced other forms of trauma, it was also found that CSA victims are more likely to present post-traumatic stress symptoms [55].…”

“…The few longitudinal studies available suggest that girls report fewer difficulties in the long term but the difficulties reported by boys are maintained over time (Bernier, Hébert, & Collin-Vézina, 2013). If clinical interventions are focused only on PTSD symptoms, the externalizing behavior problems of boys may crystallize and accentuate over time.…”

“…While no gender effect were found in the current models, it is still possible that some CSA correlates unfold or evolve differently in boys and girls over the course of longer periods of assessment. For example, the evolution of emotion regulation deficits and dissociation symptoms were found to be gender related in preschool victims of CSA over one year (Bernier et al, 2013;Langevin et al, 2015;Séguin-Lemire et al, 2017).…”
