The successful controlled homopolymerization of acrylonitrile (AN) by cobalt-mediated radical polymerization (CMRP) is reported for the first time. As a rule, initiation of the polymerization was carried out starting from a conventional azo-initiator (V-70) in the presence of bis(acetylacetonato)cobalt(II) ([Co(acac)(2)]) but also by using organocobalt(III) adducts. Molar concentration ratios of the reactants, the temperature, and the solvent were tuned, and the effect of these parameters on the course of the polymerization is discussed in detail. The best level of control was observed when the AN polymerization was initiated by an organocobalt(III) adduct at 0 degrees C in dimethyl sulfoxide. Under these conditions, poly(acrylonitrile) with a predictable molar mass and molar mass distribution as low as 1.1 was prepared. A combination of kinetic data, X-ray analyses, and DFT calculations were used to rationalize the results and to draw conclusions on the key role played by the solvent molecules in the process. These important mechanistic insights also permit an explanation of the unexpected "solvent effect" that allows the preparation of well-defined poly(vinyl acetate)-b-poly(acrylonitrile) by CMRP.

Production of nanofibrous polyacrylonitrile/calcium carbonate (PAN/CaCO 3 ) nanocomposite web was carried out through solution electrospinning process. Pore generating nanoparticles were leached from the PAN matrices in hydrochloric acid bath with the purpose of producing an ultimate nanoporous structure. The possible interaction between CaCO 3 nanoparticles and PAN functional groups was investigated. Atomic absorption method was used to measure the amount of extracted CaCO 3 nanoparticles. Morphological observation showed nanofibers of 270-720 nm in diameter containing nanopores of 50-130 nm. Monitoring the governing parameters statistically, it was found that the amount of extraction (e) of CaCO 3 was increased when the web surface area (a) was broadened according to a simple scaling law (e ¼ 3.18 a 0.4 ). The leaching process was maximized in the presence of 5% v/v of acid in the extraction bath and 5 wt % of CaCO 3 in the polymer solution. Collateral effects of the extraction time and temperature showed exponential growth within a favorable extremum at 50 C for 72 h. 2-Cyanoprop-2-yl dithionaphthalenoate (CPDN) was successfully used as the chain transfer agent to prepare polyacrylonitrile in combination with manganese(III) acetylacetonate (Mn(acac) 3 ) as the initiator. The novel polymerization exhibited well "living"/controlled characteristics. The polymerization behavior was revealed to comply with features of reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer polymerization process.
