Distal Radius Fractures: An Epidemiological Review

Abstract: by the Department of Hand and Reconstructive Microsurgery at the Singapore National University Hospital. A retrospective analysis was done. Information captured included clinical data, hand dominance, AO classification of fractures, mechanism of injury, associated injuries as well as treatment modalities. Results: Of the 431 fractures, 238 were males, 181 were females. These fractures occur at all ages, peaking at the 50 to 60 years age group. The peak incidence of distal radius fractures in females occurred in… Show more

“…In this study, the most frequent mechanisms in order were falling from a standing position or down to the ground (37.4%), direct trauma (21.5%), and motorcycle crashes (7.9%) which were consistent with previous studies. In a study by Koo et al the main mechanism of injury was falling from standing passion (Koo et al, 2013). In a study by Schwartz et al the most prevalent mechanism of injury was falling (Schwartz et al, 2005).…”

“…In some reports, all the patients going to a medical center were studied, while, some other studies, including the present study, examined the hospitalized patients with severe traumas (Urquhart et al, 2006). Moreover, the location of a specific medical center, different seasons of the year, racial differences, the level of welfare in different populations and countries influence the number of traumatic patients (Menon et al, 2008;Amin et al, 2011;Donaldson et al, 1990;Koo et al, 2013). …”

“…Clinical differences among patients who received internal fixation and those who received conservative treatment were very slight, although an increase in distal ra- dius fracture incidence and number of surgeries has been reported. [33,34] Further verification in higher-quality trials is warranted. In such future studies, long-term outcomes should be more carefully considered, more detailed information regarding fracture type should be provided, and explicit concerns regarding patient age should be taken into consideration.…”

“…Distal radius fracture is one of the most common fractures orthopedic surgeons confront, and its incidence rate seems to be increasing throughout the world (1)(2)(3)(4)(5). This fracture is the reason for one-sixth of the referrals to the emergency department (12, 13), 26% -46% of all skeletal fractures seen in the primary care setting (14-19), and 17.5% of all adult fractures (20).…”
