“…However, in four serous pleural fluid samples, the primary cancer could not be identified due to degeneration; in these samples, thyroglobulin titer was used to confirm the diagnosis of MPE from DTC. During the lifetime of patients with DTC, 6.6% to 9% developed distant metastasis [8,9]. The overall mortality rates at 5 years and 10 years after diagnosis of metastases were 65% and 75%, respectively.…”

“…Until recently, there was no effective systemic therapy for DTC patients with MPE; in fact, most MPE patients with DTC were reported to have iodine-resistant disease. Mizukami et al reported that the 10-year survival rate of patients with metastases that lacked I-131 uptake was significantly poorer than that of patients with metastases with good uptake [9]. As a novel therapeutic strategy, targeted therapy has been proven to be useful for advanced or metastatic I-131-refractory thyroid cancer, especially for pulmonary metastases.…”

“…Although PTC is more common than FTC, FTC is more prone to spread hematogenously, especially to the lungs and bone. 24) The metastatic lesion is usually hypervascular and osteolytic on radiological examination. 14) Bleeding is often profuse during surgical resection.…”

“…The presence of distant metastases, however, significantly lowers this life expectancy. 23,24 The lungs and bones are the most common sites of metastatic disease, accounting for 53% and 20% of the cases of metastasis, respectively, with multiorgan involvement occurring in 16% of patients.3 Metastases to the spine are found in up to 68% of patients with thyroid cancer and are associated with a poor clinical outcome. 1,6,8,9,29 Only 1%-3% of patients with thyroid cancer have distant metastases at the time of initial diagnosis, but 7%-23% of patients will develop distant metastases over time.…”
