Distinct Genotype of Hantavirus Infection in Rodents in Jiangxi Province, China, in 2020–2021

Abstract: Background: Hantavirus causes hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome, thus posing a major threat to human health in Jiangxi Province, China. Both Hantaan virus (HTNV) and Seoul virus (SEOV) have been found to be endemic in the province. Methods: Rodents were trapped from Gaoan Anyi and Tonggu counties in Jiangxi Province in 2020–2021. Hantavirus specific antibodies in the blood and RNA in the lung samples from the captured mammals were detected and analyzed. Results: A total of 889 small mammals from seven … Show more

However, a Food and Drug Administration (FDA)-approved vaccine is not currently available against this virus.…”

“…Belongs to the order Bunyavirales , family Hantaviridae , and genus Orthohantavirus , HTNV is an enveloped, trisegmented, negative-sense ribonucleic acid (RNA) virus. The small (S) segment encodes the nucleocapsid protein, the medium (M) segment encodes the glycoprotein precursor (GPC), and the large (L) segment encodes the RNA-dependent RNA polymerase (RdRp) 5 . GPC is cleaved by host proteases at the conserved WAASA pentapeptide site into two mature envelope glycoproteins, glycoprotein N (Gn) and glycoprotein C (Gc) 6 .…”

“…Rodents serve as significant reservoirs for numerous zoonotic pathogens [25][26][27] [28][29] The number of burrows determines the frequency (Runways count) per dunam and the number of affected dunams in each governorate. In Dhi Qar Governorate, this totaled 21,860 dunams.…”

“…Hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome (HFRS) is a zoonotic disease caused by varying serotypes of Hantavirus (HV), such as Hantaan virus (HTNV), Seoul virus (SEOV), Puumala virus (PUUV), and Dobrava virus (DOBV) [ 1 ]. Humans were infected with HFRS primarily through contact with excrement and secretions from infected animals [ 2 ]. The global annual incidence of HFRS is estimated to be approximately 60,000–150,000 cases [ 3 ], spreading across numerous countries globally.…”
