Distortional buckling of perforated cold-formed steel channel-section beams with circular holes in web

Abstract: This paper presents the numerical and analytical investigations on the distortional buckling of perforated cold-formed steel channel-section beams with circular holes in web. The numerical investigation involves the use of finite element methods. In the analytical analysis the distortional buckling model recommended in EN1993-1-3 is employed. The influence of the web holes on the distortional buckling behaviour and corresponding critical stress and moment of perforated cold-formed steel channel-section beams a… Show more

“…The influence of holes on the distortional buckling behaviour has also been examined. From the present work, the following conclusions can be drawn:  The proposed analytical solution predicts the distortional buckling stress of PCFS channelsection beams, which is more accurate than that obtained from modified EN1993-1-3 model [17].…”

“…Crisan et al [14][15] studied the behaviour of PFCS sections in compression using experimental, numerical and theoretical methods. Experiments were carried out by Moen and Schafer [16] [17] presented an analytical formulation to predict the distortional critical buckling stress of PCFS beams, the distortional buckling model of CFS sections recommended in EN1993-1-3 was employed. However, the distortional buckling stress obtained from modified EN1993-1-3 [18] model was found to be conservative, compared with that from Hancock [19] method or numerical methods.…”

“…1000 mm and 1500 mm) are also carried out using ANSYS software. The reason for selecting such a section size and such short beam lengths is to make sure the smaller critical stresses obtained from the finite element analysis include the distortional buckling mode [29]. The beam analysed is assumed to be simply supported at its two ends and subjected to a uniformly distributed transverse loads q cr applied at the shear centre.…”

“…Wang et al [3] have optimized the cross-sectional shapes of CFS beams and beam-columns by considering the axial load and the bending moment for a single-symmetric section. Yuan et al [4] and Moen and Schafer [5] have investigated the buckling behavior of CFS beams with holes in the web. Wang and Young [6] have studied the behavior of CFS built-up section beams with different screw arrangements.…”
